GS1 article codes, EAN/GTIN

EAN-13 is the most widely used GS1 code to identify items. Online and in-store. An EAN-13 is found on almost all product packaging, often in the form of a barcode.

For small retail items where an EAN-13 code doens't fit, use this short 8-digit code. Note: this does not apply to medical devices and pharmaceuticals. For these you always use the EAN-13.

Global Location Number/GLN

A Global Location Number identifies business venues. You can also code internal locations with GLN. Like a warehouse rack or an agricultural plot. This way you know exactly where something is or comes from.

Serial Shipping Container Code/SSCC

With a Serial Shipping Container Code you code shipments. The SSCC is assigned to a shipment. Once the shipment reaches its destination and is booked, the shipping code expires.
